Position: Junior Web Designer

Overview:
WRI is seeking a Junior Web Designer to join our Online Communications team within our External Relations Department. This is a unique opportunity for a web-savvy designer to grow their career and skills, to take an active role in improving a variety of web properties, to wear many hats using a variety of skills– and to do so with a team that is making a huge positive impact on the environment. WRI is a fast-growing environmental think tank with diverse programs that operate both globally and within targeted countries and regions. WRI’s work includes climate change, deforestation, ecosystem protection, sustainable markets, environmental governance, and sustainable transport ation and cities.
The Online Communications team supports WRI’s programs by helping them develop, execute, and manage successful online strategies, based on each program’s goals and intended audience, as well as positioning the Institute and its branding strategy worldwide.
The Junior Web Designer will be responsible for designing, creating and managing the display of content and data visualizations on WRI’s two flagship websites– wri.org and insights.wri.org– and to serve as an occasional advisor to WRI’s 40 + smaller online properties.
The successful candidate will bring a well-rounded mix of creative and technical skills to a job that is primarily focused on delivering a great user experience and smartly-displayed content on WRI’s two flagship websites. Key responsibilities include:
User experience design,
Creative asset design (graphics, tables, bullets, charts, maps, callout badges, banners, photos or other visual elements)
Front-end development.

You can also expect to have a hands-on role working alongside the Director of Online Communications to support the day-to-day workflow of operating the sites, light content formatting to creatively feature WRI’s content, and creating new content types and views using Drupal’s administrative interface. Additionally, the Junior Web Designer will assist the Director of Online Communications at times to manage external developers and designers on larger projects.
This position requires a highly organized and technically proficient web professional with demonstrated project management skills. Real-world experience with HTML, CSS, and content management systems (CMS) is required, including the ability to produce valid, standards-compliant, and well-documented code and turn designs into pages that render properly on a variety of browsers and devices. Experience with JavaScript and Drupal-based websites is strongly preferred but not required.
The successful candidate will enjoy the challenge of working with professionals that may have limited technology experience to create great solutions for the web, and possess infectious enthusiasm for great websites, with the practical skills to forge solutions to communications needs.

Responsibilities:
50 % Continuously improve site design, features and layout on wri.org and WRI project sites.
25 % Manage content and workflow across a vibrant online ecosystem.
10 % Research options and make recommendations for ways to leverage new online technologies to enhance WRI’s ability to communicate its work, such as creating visual and interactive content using JavaScript, Jquery widgets, and other Web 2.0 technologies.
5 % Help develop and manage effective online strategies for each project, working with Online Communications and project staff.
5 % Train and support other content providers on the Drupal content management system, helping them reformat source content (in PDF, Word, email, etc) to HTML, select and process photos, and embed multimedia.
5 % Work with WRI’s external Drupal development service provider to manage a list of monthly bug fixes and planned site enhancements

Qualifications:
Core Competencies:
1-3years overall experience in web design
Bachelor’s Degree preferred, preference also given to Drupal experience

Required skills and experience:
2-3 years experience using HTML and CSS to develop online content and presentation. Ability to hand-code and troubleshoot issues. Actual work samples are required.
1-2 years of experience designing web sites and creating visual web assets, such as callouts, navigational elements, buttons, badges, icons, etc. Examples of your work will be required.
1-2 years experience managing online content management systems, particularly open-source platforms such as Drupal or WordPress.
A good command of the Adobe creative suite and other web tools.
Understanding of web best practices and standards.
The ability to communicate complex ideas to a non-specialist audience.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to manage multiple tasks across different teams, and take initiative.
A keen interest and curiosity in using online technologies and ideas to solve communications problems.
Enthusiasm, flexibility, technical curiosity, and willingness to experiment and learn.

Preferred skills and experience:
1-2 years working with Drupal-based websites.
Project management experience developing websites using outside developers.
Experience with JavaScript and Jquery libraries.
Interest in sustainability and development issues.
