Overview:
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol at the World Resources Institute seeks a results-oriented, self-driven intern for a three-month internship beginning in June 2011. The intern will conduct interviews and desk research to compile, analyze and write case studies containing both quantitative and qualitatitve information to establish the business case for measuring, reporting and managing GHG emissions. In addition, the intern will also provide support for an ongoing project on designing training courses based on the GHG Protocol standards and calculation tools, as well as be a part of other GHG Protocol projects in developing countries.
The GHG Protocol (www.ghgprotocol.org) is the most widely used international accounting framework for government and business leaders to understand, quantify, and manage greenhouse gas emissions. It is a decade-long partnership between the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
The position will involve a significant amount of interaction with companies and GHG programs in many countries including Brazil, Mexico, India and the US. It will give an opportunity to gain expertise in the GHG Protocol standards and be closely involved in preparing a case study compendium on the benefits of GHG accounting and measurement. The position will offer exciting synergies with ongoing programs within the GHG Protocol, especially the development of new standards for life-cycle/product-level accounting and on policy accounting as well as the GHG Protocol’s work in developing countries.
The position is located at WRI’s headquarters in Washington DC. This is an unpaid internship.
Responsibilities:
• Conduct desk research and interviews and analyze the information to draft case studies featuring companies and organizations to demonstrate the business case for GHG measurement and reporting
• Support the design and development of training courses on GHG Protocol standards and tools to be used in multiple countries
• Assist in planning and preparation of GHG Protocol’s second International Workshop of GHG Programs
• Assist in conducting a survey of GHG programs, particularly, in developing countries, to document their growth and challenges faced
Qualifications:
• Undergraduate degree in environmental science, business, economics or other relevant discipline
• Demonstrated research and writing skills
• Familiarity with the GHG Protocol and GHG accounting
• Excellent academic performance
• Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written English
• Proficiency in Portuguese / Spanish language preferable
• Highly motivated self-starter with strong organizational and interpersonal skills
• Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office, especially Power Point/computer graphics, and internet research
