ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING:
The Systems Administration Specialist position is located in Headquarters within the Management Information Services (MIS) Branch, Division of Management Services (DMS).
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general supervision of the Chief, MIS Branch and direct supervision of the Chief, Applications Development Section, the Systems Administration Specialist will be responsible for all UNIX based systems and the organizational communication systems which include Messaging, Calendar, Directory and Single Sign On. Additionally the incumbent will be responsible for the technical architecture of the web based application server infrastructure including middleware, database systems, the organizational Global Directory, and an enterprise Portal. The incumbent’s specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
Implement, and maintain the UNIX server infrastructure for all intranet and extranet applications running Sun hardware and Solaris Operating System. Install, configure and support Sun Java software (Directory, Access Manager (OpenSSO), Messaging, and Calendar), Apache web servers, Tomcat application servers, and the Informix and MySQL databases. Responsibilities also include installation, configuration and administration of Cognos Reporting Server and Documentum based document management system.
Support the end-users and developers of the Liferay based Enterprise Portal system.
Develop scripts to for system automation, notifications, reporting and data synchronization. Development of web-based applications for administration of the organization directory and other systems.
Responsible for server infrastructure capacity planning, upgrade planning, patch administration, security administration, and documentation. Communicate with vendors and manage vendor service contracts.
Liaise with applications developers and other internal technical users to understand and collect requirements and provide implementation support for web applications written in Java, JavaScript, ColdFusion and PERL. Analyze requirements; prepare project documents and implementation plans.
Participate in related infrastructure and security planning sessions by advocating appropriate technology initiatives and coordinating their evaluation, deployment, and management.
Participate in the development of long-range plans aimed at enhancing UNFPA’s server infrastructure and security management posture.
Represent UNFPA to external partners and in interagency meetings related to server infrastructure and security.
Represent MIS in organizational disaster recovery and business continuity initiatives.
Keep abreast with the current and emerging technologies with the objective of analyzing and improving upon the server availability, security and performance levels in order to optimize effectiveness of the servers and Internet/Intranet services.
Miscellaneous tasks as assigned by supervisor.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Advanced university degree in Computer Science or related field. A first level university degree combined with professional IT certifications may be acceptable in lieu of the advanced university degree.
5 years of increasingly responsible experience in the server infrastructure and administration fields in a large multinational organization or in a large international corporation, with at least 3 years of related management experience.
Strong analytical skills to evaluate solutions and resolve issues. Ability to supervise staff and consultants, make major decisions independently and work well with others. Ability to work under pressure and prioritize tasks.
Broad general knowledge of information technology , with proficient command of the Sun Solaris 10 Operating Systems, Sun Hardware platforms and other UNIX operating systems. A thorough understanding of the Sun Java Messaging, Calendar, Directory and Access Manager (OpenSSO) software.
A strong knowledge of networking in TCP/IP, routing, network troubleshooting, network protocols (DNS, IMAP, POP3, SMTP, DHCP, SSH, LDAP) and firewall security administration.
An advanced knowledge of Apache Web Server, Tomcat Application Server, Informix and Mysql RDBMS, sendmail, LDAP directories and several programming languages including PERL, Shell Script, Java, JavaScript, Coldfusion and SQL.
Familiarity with network backup software, fibre storage networks and disk arrays including replication and snap-shots.
Fluency in English. Other UN language(s) an asset.
