North America Regional Office
The UNOPS North America Regional Office provides services that help implement projects for a range of partners, and support operations run by the UNOPS Mine Action Cluster, Small Grants Cluster and Development Group Cluster. In addition, the office serves as a liaison between UNOPS headquarters and its Executive Board, which supports and supervises UNOPS activities globally.

The UNOPS Development Group Cluster is based in the North America Office and supports a diverse and complex portfolio including partners such as the United Nations Development Programme (the Bureau for Development Policy, the Human Development Report Office, and the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation), the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations Capital Development Fund, the United Nations Secretariat and a broadening community of primarily New York-based UN partners in the delivery of project management, implementation and administration services.

Background Information – Job-specific
The Special Unit for South-South Cooperation is mandated to promote, coordinate and support South-South and triangular cooperation on a global and United Nations system-wide basis. It receives policy directives and guidance from the General Assembly High-level Committee (HLC) on South-South Cooperation, serving as its Secretariat. In this capacity, among other things, it prepares substantive reports, including the report of the Secretary-General on the state of South-South cooperation. The Special Unit also undertakes a range of other activities relating to policy dialogue, development and advocacy as well as to the promotion of South-South knowledge – and experience-sharing by development partners and the piloting of mechanisms and partnerships for scaling up South-South exchanges. Initiatives in these areas, including the three-in-one architecture (Global South-South Development Academy, the Global South-South Development Expo and the South-South Global Assets and Technology Exchange) to support the development community, often call for editorial support to produce high-level reports and other types of documentation and publications.

Functional Responsibilities
The consultant will support the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation in undertaking the tasks described below:
Edit all manuscripts of reports and case studies, including graphs, statistical tables and images, in accordance with United Nations editorial requirements, checking for correct grammar, spelling and word usage; minimizing the use of acronyms; and ensuring consistency in style and format as well as the clarity and logic of arguments;
Support and oversee with the production of publications to ensure quality control, including reviewing the designer’s work and coordinating communication between the Special Unit and the designer (where appropriate), proofreading the typeset and blue-line versions and reviewing the sample proofs before final publication.

Competencies
Demonstrate excellent and effective written skills;
Ability to manage multiple tasks, set deadlines and plan work independently;
Set clear priorities and be able to meet key deadlines under pressure;
Experience with policy writing for UN agencies is an asset.
Knowledge of South-South and triangular cooperation is highly desirable

Education/Experience/Language requirements
Advanced degree specializing in Language, International Policy or closely related field required
At least 11-14 years of editing experience in English;
Fluent in English, working knowledge in another UN official language required
