Background
The Private Sector Division (PSD) in New York supports UNDP Country Offices in implementing the private sector strategy through the Inclusive Market Development (IMD) approach. The IMD approach stimulates market driven solutions to poverty reduction by strengthening market sectors where the poor are economically active and can benefit. This includes facilitation of value chain integration and “pro-poor” investments that are commercially attractive and address local development needs. Through this approach UNDP engages partners to address capacity and policy constraints that enable the targeted markets or sectors to work better for the poor.
The overall aim of the internship is to support PSD in promoting and maintaining the global Community of Practice, i.e., a network of Private Sector practitioners from UNDP Country Offices around the world interested in sharing of information and knowledge and providing mutual advisory support in collaboration with the private sector as well as foundations.
Duties and Responsibilities
The intern is requested to provide support in the following tasks:
* Assist with introducing a new collaborative system for Country Offices (COs) staff working on private sector issues – tasks would involve migrating / organizing space, editing / writing texts.
* Assist in introducing a new software for external websites (internet ) – tasks would involve migration, writing text – no previous deep IT knowledge is required.
* Conduct research on issues relating to developing of inclusive markets, business impact in achieving the MDGs that support UNDP practitioners work in COs.
* Conduct a survey to COs that update information on private sector activities in Country Offices – tasks would involve contacting COs around the world and documenting/updating their activities on Private Sector.
* Preparation of documents and information for posting on the external PSD website as well as PSD intranet (editing, communication with COs).
* Assistance in preparing a UNDP private sector newsletter – an information bulletin for UNDP external partners informing about UNDP private sector activities around the world.
* Update information on the private sector experts roster; updating information on UNDP network of experts on private sector.
* Conducting PS related research as requested.
* Participating in meetings in UNDP HQ as requested

* Excellent writing skills, as well as strong analytical aptitude and strong communication skills.
* Excellent organizational, time management and strong interpersonal skills.
* Computer proficiency: MS Office.
* Networking skills to engage with key internal and external partners.
* Ability to work flexibly and meet tight deadlines.
* Strong understanding of PSD Strategy.
* Effective communications and interpersonal skills.
* Attention to details and proven ability to work independently and effectively with minimum supervision.
* Theoretical and practical understanding of the role of private sector in development.
* Language requirements: Fluent in both written and spoken English.
Required Skills and Experience
* Available for working in the Private Sector Division (PSD) full time for a period of 3-6 months. (Applicants available for six months are preferred. Applicants must state their availability).
* Currently enrolled in a graduate-level degree programme as a full-time student in development related fields.
* The candidates who are shortlisted for an interview must submit prior the interview the following documents:
1) Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme (and graduation date).
2) Copy of school transcript.
* Before receiving a contract, the selected candidate will have to provide the additional
documents:
1) Letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member who has directly supervised the student in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with the student’s performance.
2) A brief paper setting out the reasons why he/she is seeking an internship with UNDP and what is expected from the experience.
3) A Medical Certificate of Good Health from a recognized physician. If the intern is expected to travel outside the country of their residence, other than to Europe and North America, the physician must indicate whether he/she is fit to travel and has had the required inoculations for the country or countries to which the intern is to travel.
