DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is located in ReliefWeb Section, Communications and Information Services Branch (CISB), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The incumbent reports to the Chief Editor.
Within delegated authority, the Editor will be responsible for the following duties:
Manage the daily updating of the web site during the Americas duty hours;
Supervise and train the editorial team on daily content management;
Coordinate coverage in consultation with other ReliefWeb and OCHA teams;
Undertake content posting as required;
Work with the Chief Editor and editorial teams in all duty stations (New York, Bangkok, Nairobi) to ensure timely coverage of emergencies and disasters with relevant and reliable humanitarian information;
Manage the curation of content and services for countries/themes assigned or for targeted client groups;
Stay abreast of humanitarian trends and issues of concern in the countries and regions assigned and, contribute to the on-going development of coverage guidance and information sources;
Perform editorial and classification functions on information published on ReliefWeb to ensure comprehensiveness, timeliness, reliability, relevance and usefulness of a range of content, including reports, maps, data, info-graphic, multimedia content and links;
Build and extend partnerships with relevant organizations and individuals for collaboration and joint initiatives using ReliefWeb platform and services;
Represent ReliefWeb in outreach and other efforts to enhance partnerships;
Contribute to developing, updating, maintaining and implementing editorial guidelines and content management procedures;
Contribute to on-going improvements and development of the website, features, services, tools, design and usability;
Contribute to on-going improvements to editorial team management, business processes and workflow;
Contribute to annual planning, mid-year review, for work and resource requirements, and manage resources under his/her responsibility.

COMPETENCIES
Professionalism:
Comprehensive knowledge of, and exposure to, a wide range of humanitarian experiences, emergency relief and related human rights issues;
Demonstrated problem-solving skills and strong research skills;
Very good knowledge of institutional mandates, policies and guidelines pertaining to humanitarian affairs;
Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and formulate clear recommendations and action points;
Sufficient understanding of the roles of, and first-hand experience from working with, different humanitarian organizations, including non-UN humanitarian organizations;
Knowledge of institutional mandates, policies and guidelines pertaining to humanitarian principles and humanitarian law;
Sound knowledge of the institutions of the UN system;
Proficiency in Content Management Systems is desirable.
Proficiency in application of information management principles and web publication standards, including taxonomy, is desirable.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
A minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation or development, human rights, information management, journalism or other related area; Experience within OCHA, the UN common system or an international NGO in a humanitarian emergency at the field level is an advantage; Experience in the application of web-based information services in humanitarian response is desirable.

Education:
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political or social sciences, international studies, journalism, or information management within a humanitarian context or other relevant field is required; a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in combination of qualifying relevant professional experience may be accepted in lieu of advanced university degree.

Languages:
For this position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
