Background / General description
The World Bank’s external web site — www.worldbank.org–, available in Arabic, English French, Spanish and Chinese, provides 24 million unique visitors a year with timely information and serves as a symbol of the institution’s transparency and willingness to work with clients and partners around the world. It is the Bank’s most public tool for broadcasting results and demonstrating openness and accountability. Managing the quality and presentation of information on the site is critical to fulfilling the Bank’s development and communications goals. The Web Program in the Corporate Communications unit of External Affairs (EXT) is looking for an Online Communications Assistant (ETT) with an enormous amount of creative energy, knowledge of development issues, and an ability to assist the Bank’s online presence in the institution’s five corporate languages. The Assistant reports to the Head of Online Communications.
Duties and Accountabilities
The Online Communications Assistant plays a supporting role in systems maintenance, content management, and effectiveness measurement in the day-to-day operations of the Bank’s external site. Among the principal responsibilities of the position are:
Contributing to development and maintenance of the EXT Online web editorial calendar, including the use of technology tools to prioritize, track, and report on components
Preparing, packaging and adapting simple and moderately complex online communications products, including drafting and editing specific components, with minimal supervision
Ensuring that web content is optimized for search engines and complies with the Bank’s technical standards
Creating and publishing graphics, multimedia, video, and audio content
Publishing to the content management system in compliance with the Bank’s information management procedures and practices
Participating in preparing and leveraging social media and other online products to ensure maximum impact
Compiling and publishing metrics reports and preparing follow-up recommendations
Composing newsletters and other promotional materials; managing internal and external mail lists; maintaining e-mail alerts and other marketing tools
Managing the archiving of content according to Bank standards
Selection Criteria
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Interactive Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field and at least one year’s relevant web work experience
Excellent written and spoken command of English and preferably at least one other corporate language
Experience working with content management systems, html, Photoshop and other online presentation tools
Experience creating multimedia and interactive content (such as slideshows, videos, and timelines)
Working knowledge of search engine optimization and web marketing techniques
Understanding of contemporary online information channels, social media communications principles, and other web 2.0 technologies
Familiarity with industry tools for online performance measurement; ability help establish key performance indicators, analyze web metrics data, and produce reports
Understanding of, and the ability to participate actively in, editorial processes, including packaging online content, drafting and editing basic or moderately complex products, and ensuring adherence to grammar and style
Good time-management skills and eye for detail; able to use technology tools such as calendars and “to-do” lists to organize and track information; can produce clear, detailed reports related to stated objectives
Interest in international development issues and an understanding of how communications can assist key audiences in meeting challenges
Good demonstrated levels of initiative, judgment, and decisiveness in accomplishing tasks
Ability to work capably under stress and to juggle multiple tasks within tight deadlines
Strong diplomatic, interpersonal, and teamwork skills; sensitivity to working in a multicultural environment
