Background / General description
Over the past decade, the Bank’s external website www.worldbank.org has greatly expanded the institution’s ability to reach out to the development community. The site is our most important tool for sharing knowledge, connecting with more than 2 million visitors a month to explore the activities of the Bank and demonstrate the effectiveness of programs worldwide. Ensuring the highest standards for both the quality of the information and its presentation is critical to fulfilling the Bank’s development and communications goals. The Bank’s Web Program is seeking an individual with significant web management and strategy development experience who can join the team responsible for overall management and policy compliance; editorial and content quality; usability and design; site analytics and marketing; email feedback; multilingual web outreach; and innovation. The chief responsibility of this position is to lead on editorial and content-related aspects of the Bank’s web governance effort.
Duties and Accountabilities
VPU-level web governance
Advises VPU Web Liaisons and Web Coordinators in establishing and managing VPU-level web governance
Working with colleagues, identifies and develops outreach, training events, and materials to educate and strengthen units’ web governance
In consultation with the WPO team, develops a framework to measure VPU web governance compliance and best practice; advises units on regular reporting about their web activities
Liaises with VPU web coordinators to identify areas where the WPO can improve its processes and communications practice; works with the team to implement these changes and recommendations
Leads on-boarding and relevant training on governance and online best practices; mentoring of online communications staff
Supports Web Program and VPU efforts to analyze web staffing needs Web standards and policies
Advises clients across the Bank on editorial quality and effective presentation of online content; develops appropriate learning/training sessions
Sets web standards, including in emerging areas of online operations; provides guidance on review of new online content to ensure compliance with the Bank’s editorial, design, and usability standards and good practices
Identifies practical steps for raising overall quality of online content, including ways it can be strengthened during the transition to the Bank’s new web platform
Writes, edits, and works with colleagues to present information on web-related policies, procedures, standards, and innovation, through both written communications and in-person events with VPUs’ web teams and management Web Program Office communications
Leads communications efforts of the Governance team with Bank-wide online community; establishes a community of practice for online professionals; liaises and coordinates with the WPO online, business and tech teams as well as CommNet
Leads the Governance Team internal and external communications, including the writing and editing of periodic or stand-alone reports on web strategy, governance activities, innovative projects and initiatives, and site performance; PowerPoint presentations; and high-priority or politically sensitive emails and announcements
Provides oversight of Web Program intranet site; develops, edits, and revises content as needed Other projects
Supports other Web Program initiatives as needed and relevant to skills and experience
Selection Criteria
Master’s degree (in Communications, English, International Relations/Public Affairs, Journalism, or other related disciplines) and 5 years of relevant work experience; or Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of relevant work experience.
Outstanding, proven skills in writing, editing, and proofreading in English; experience in setting and communicating editorial standards strongly preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for online content, including social media and multimedia; growing knowledge of web technology landscape; experience in website development a plus.
Established knowledge of approaches and tools for planning, executing, and monitoring communications strategies.
Strong ability to communicate complex information effectively, including on technical and emerging aspects of the web, verbally and through PowerPoint presentations, to a range of audiences, including Bank management.
Solid understanding of the Bank’s business lines, stakeholders, products, and systems strongly preferred.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to balance enforcement of web standards with client needs.
Proven ability to work well in a team environment, including in cross-functional teams; experience in leading projects and teams a plus.
Strong diplomatic, interpersonal, and teamwork skills; demonstrated client orientation; sensitivity to working in a multicultural environment.
Personal and professional integrity, self motivation, and proven ability to work independently.
