Position Summary:
Relief International (RI) is a humanitarian organization that saves lives, sustains livelihoods and enhances human capacity in communities facing poverty, ongoing conflict or natural disaster. RI seeks a dynamic full-time Foundations Development Officer for our San Francisco office, to be responsible for developing individual, foundation, and corporate support for RI nationwide, with a special emphasis on Northern California. The Development Officer will work closely with the Philanthropy Manager, Special Assistant and Chief Executive Officer to execute and monitor a comprehensive strategy for pursuing, developing and maintaining foundation, corporate and individual relationships; develop, write and edit grant proposals and reports; and support the development and execution of all fund-raising efforts and special events as needed. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a significant history of garnering support from corporations, foundations, other philanthropic organizations, and individuals. He/she should have demonstrated grant writing skills, exceptionally strong communication skills, and ability to work both independently as well as in a team.
Key Responsibilities:
-Responsible for developing individual, foundation, and corporate support for RI nationwide, with a special emphasis on Northern California
-Expanding institutional and individual donor base through research, outreach, and the development of relationships with current and potential foundations relevant to RI’s portfolio, including private and corporate foundations
-Work with relevant departments to develop and maintain comprehensive development strategies for major donor relations (institutional and individual)
Essential Duties
-Solicit, track, and maintain reporting for major gifts and grants in accordance with RI policies and procedures
-Conduct research, outreach, and necessary follow up activities to cultivate institutional and individual donors nationwide, with a special emphasis on California
-Manage the development of concept papers and project proposals for small to mid-sized foundations
-Maintain communications and reporting to existing donors
-Represent RI in necessary meetings, conferences, and other external representation, as delegated
-Provide direct support in foundation-related fundraising in the event of an emergency to which Relief International responds
-Maintain regular communication with relevant departments to ensure the efficient coordination of foundation and major gift fundraising efforts
-Assist in the creation and editing of promotional materials for print, such as informational brochures
-Assist on the planning and coordination of fundraising events in Northern California
-Maintain materials for donor meetings and help produce donor packets
-Research and locate new sources of individual major gifts and coordinate on outreach and solicitation
-Strategize and promote campaigns to increase awareness of Relief International in donor communities
-Oversee Foundation Relations interns
Qualifications & Requirements:
-A minimum of three years of successful development experience including solicitation, cultivation, prospecting and stewardship of institutional and individual funders for a nonprofit organization, international focus preferred
-Master’s degree required
-Familiar with major San Francisco and West Coast funders
-A minimum of 3 years of successful grant/proposal writing experience, international focus highly preferred
-Demonstrated outstanding writing and communications skills
-Demonstrated capacity to develop and sustain valued donor relationships
-Work well independently and in a team environment, and adapt to a rapidly changing environment
-Experience with a donor database and working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
-Ability to work under pressure and deadlines
-Superior organizational and time management skills
