Position: Reproductive Health Senior Researcher/Principal Investigator
Location: United States of America (the) – Washington,DC
PSI seeks a Reproductive Health Senior Researcher/Principal Investigator (PI) to be based in Washington, DC. The PI is the health area research lead at PSI, impacting policy and program strategy through learning, transparency, and dissemination. S/he will serve as PSI’s research expert and will continuously improve the organization’s evidence base in reproductive health, produce actionable analyses to strengthen program implementation, and diffuse findings to internal and external stakeholders via publications and presentations. The ultimate aim of this position is to provide strategic direction to PSI in reproductive health research and to produce an ongoing systematic review of study findings to influence policy. The position will require extensive travel (approximately 30%), will work closely with the HIV & TB Principal Investigator, and reports directly to the Deputy Director, Research & Metrics with indirect reporting to the Director, HIV, TB & Reproductive Health. The PI will be responsive to donor requests and will work through regional- and country-level researchers as appropriate.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provide strategic guidance for research for interventions in the following areas:
* Modern contraceptive use, maternal health, reproductive health/HIV integration, social franchising, barriers to service provision, and quality of care through providers
* Monitor trends in disease and reproductive health indicators
* Document and disseminate best practices and minimum standards as well as lessons learned within PSI and externally:
* Develop concept papers, toolkits, training materials, and templates
* Present at international conferences and meetings and coordinate conference abstracts to highlight research at country-,regional-, and organizational-levels
* Review research briefs and publish in peer-reviewed journals
* Estimate programmatic effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and equity of interventions using repeated cross sectional, control group, and experimental designs; assist with goal-level evaluation and health impact measurement
* Improve existing model study designs and create new ones. Pilot new research methods and standardize strategies. Design, propose, and implement operations research
* Participate in interdisciplinary working groups to develop research tools that are responsive to stakeholder needs
* Work with New Business Development and the HIV, TB & Reproductive Health technical team to provide technical inputs for fundraising efforts in reproductive health
* Develop partnerships with external institutions and researchers working on relevant and related research to meet and share best practices
* Provide researchers and country programs with technical assistance, supervision and quality assurance in developing logical frameworks, study designs, data analysis, report writing, stakeholder reporting, and the use of evidence for decision making
* Work with Research & Metrics to improve measurement of key metrics for reproductive health products, services, and communications programs
* Build capacity among researchers at the regional and country platform level; develop and deliver trainings at headquarters and in the field
* Supervise researchers and consultants as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Medical degree or PhD in public health, epidemiology, behavioral sciences, population studies/demography, or a related field;
* 5+ years professional experience in the design, analysis, dissemination, and management of research pertaining to reproductive health interventions in developing countries;
* Management of multiple research studies and development of capacity of in-country research staff
* Design and implementation of operations research and population-based surveys
* Extensive knowledge of a statistical analysis program (SPSS, STATA or SAS); strong analysis skills
* Experience designing different types of qualitative studies and analyzing qualitative data (in Ethnograph, Atlas TI, or similar program)
* Ability to develop research training tools and materials for a variety of contexts, learning curves and needs
* Ability to travel up to 30% of the time internationally
* Excellent written, verbal and inter-personal communication skills.
Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in low- and middle-income countries, knowledge of public health issues and social marketing products, ability to speak French, Spanish, or Portuguese, and/or familiarity with the international donor development community.
