PSI seeks candidates for the role of Child Survival Senior Researcher/Principal Investigator (PI) to improve the quality of PSI evidence for child survival interventions; and increase the use of internal and external evidence for decision making at PSI and among the global child survival community. The PI sets standards for all aspects of child survival evidence including: designing and refining log frames, study designs, MIS, measurement of behavior and its determinants, measurement of disease burden, improved data collection and dissemination of policy relevant results and learning. The PI continuously reviews and synthesizes information on programmatic effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and equity of child survival interventions, and the determinants of child survival behaviors. The PI is the health area research lead at PSI, impacting policy and program strategy through learning, transparency, and dissemination.
For the first 2 years the focus of work for the Child Survival Senior Researcher/Principal Investigator will be the design, monitoring and evaluation of child survival innovation projects. These are new, often integrated, child survival interventions in areas such as community case management, nutrition and water, hygiene and sanitation. The PI will take a lead in designing, documenting and disseminating learning from these innovation projects to accelerate the launch and scaling up of successful approaches in other PSI country programs.
The Child Survival Senior Researcher/Principal Investigator reports to the Vice President, Malaria and Child Survival, and is based in Washington DC with 30% travel throughout Africa and Asia.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Ensure rigorous program design, monitoring and evaluation of child survival programs at PSI with special focus on child survival innovation projects
•Review and comment on routine M&E reports for all child survival innovation projects
•Produce and disseminate case studies for all child survival innovation projects
•Develop & support implementation of model study designs, questionnaires and relevant research tools to ensure quality routine child survival research
•Develop & support implementation of tools for monitoring health impact of child survival control activities using internal and external sources of data
•Provide guidance to Regional Researchers and country teams on optimal use of research tools for routine child survival research and for monitoring health impact of child survival interventions
•Review study designs for child survival data collection throughout PSI
•Seek and distill international guidance on relevant issues in child survival research
•Synthesize PSI child survival study results for internal and external audiences
•Answer key questions in child survival using internal and external sources of data
•Publish study results in peer-reviewed journals capable of influencing policy-level decision making in child survival
•Present study results at international conferences and support child survival presentations made by PSI colleagues to ensure quality
•Provide technical support in the development and implementation of M&E frameworks and plans for child survival proposals submitted by PSI platforms and HQ
•Provide technical support to the CIDA CMM M&E activities
•Promote partnerships with other important child survival organizations and researchers
QUALIFICATIONS:
•MD/MPH or PhD in public health, tropical medicine, entomology, parasitology, behavioral sciences, population studies, or a related field
•3-5 years of professional experience in the design and implementation of population-based surveys pertaining to health behavior and public health interventions in developing countries
•Experience with methodologies including: quantitative behavioral studies, qualitative research, operations research, applications of GIS in behavioral and market studies, and development of multi-item scales
•Experience with analyses including: multivariate analysis, factor analysis, content analysis of qualitative data, weighting data and controlling for study design in data analysis
•Extensive knowledge in monitoring and evaluation of public health programs
•Extensive knowledge of at least one discipline within child survival or other infectious disease
•Ability to train and develop capacity in regional and country-level staff
•Strong written and verbal communication skills
•Ability to effectively work with decision makers to generate actionable research
•Extensive knowledge of a statistical analysis program (SPSS or STATA)
•Excellent interpersonal skills
•Proficiency in French and/or Portuguese is desirable
