Position Overview:
The Associate Director of Medical Informatics plays a leadership role on a dynamic team working to enable the efficient collection and use of high quality, reliable data at PIH to strengthen programs, support quality improvement and academic research and improve the care delivered to patients. Based in Boston with frequent travel to PIH sites, the Associate Director manages a team developing software such as OpenMRS, an open source Electronic Medical Record (EMR), works with site-based staff to strengthen electronic and paper-based record systems, and provides an important voice within PIH discussions on information use and strategy.
Primary Responsibilities:
Team Leadership
Act as the primary contact for site-based Informatics teams, traveling frequently to assess requirements, share best practices and assess priorities
Establish workplans for the Medical Informatics team that reflect site needs; work closely with counterparts on the Clinical teams, Program team and the Monitoring, Evaluation and Quality (MEQ) team to ensure that these plans fit PIH’s overall strategies
Manage the recruitment of Boston-hired Informatics staff, approving job descriptions, conducting interviews and overseeing trainings and transitions
In coordination with the Director, represent the Medical Informatics team at senior PIH meetings, high-level meetings with external partners, and conferences
Write grants to fund Informatics projects in collaboration with the Director
Stay up-to-date with the latest advances in eHealth technology to understand how these might be applied within PIH
Project Management
Assess existing project management practices within the Medical Informatics team; design and implement an improved management framework with structured documentation, deliverables and workplans
Act as lead project manager for high priority projects; train other members of the team to manage smaller projects
Communicate the team’s workplans to others at PIH to ensure that resource allocations and timeframes are understood
Organization-wide Collaboration/Strategy
Work with MEQ to define requirements for indicators, data analyses and visualizations, establish procedures to generate this data routinely, and promote its use within PIH
Ensure that the Research team can use Informatics data appropriately by assessing requirements clearly defining data models, providing reliable access to data
Lead the development of cross-site strategies for improving the quality and transparency of Informatics data; collaborate with the MEQ and Research teams on other data quality-related work
Synthesize business processes, tasks, workflows and other functional requirements for paper and electronic data systems to identify best practices and common areas of overlap
In collaboration with the Lead Software Developer, identify common design requirements for software systems developed by PIH; work to develop core tools and the meet these requirements and provide common, consistent user experiences
In coordination with the MEQ and Research teams, provide trainings and documentation to build capacity within PIH on relational databases and data analyses
Qualifications:
Five years of work experience, including at least two years in a leadership role in medical informatics, software development, or a related field
Masters degree preferred
Highly organized, efficient and numerate
Effective at communicating to people from a wide variety of educational, professional and cultural backgrounds
Experience with project management, product management, and/or business analysis
Experience in staff supervision and training
Innovative and creative; able to think big picture while paying attention to details
Collaborative problem solver; unafraid to take responsibility where needed
Strong interest in social justice, healthcare and international development
Comfortable traveling in resource-poor settings up to 30 % of the year; previous experience working abroad with an international organization preferred
