About IVAC:
The mission of the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is to accelerate global access to life-saving vaccines through the development and implementation of evidence-based policies. The work of IVAC focuses on disease epidemiology, vaccine economics and supply, monitoring and evaluation of vaccine introduction and Center programs, and advocacy and communications activities to increase the profile of and global action on vaccine-preventable disease. Specifically, our work includes:
* Determining global, regional and local burdens of disease
* Evaluating the safety, immunogenicity, and effectiveness of vaccines
* Understanding local and policy-maker perceptions of a variety of important diseases, including pneumonia, diarrhea and related vaccines
* Assessing the cost-effectiveness of investments in immunization
* Communicating the evidence around immunization to key decision-makers
* Building key coalitions of advocates for child survival through comprehensive treatment and prevention strategies, including immunization
* Increasing the awareness and engagement of the public and other stakeholders around the burden of vaccine preventable diseases and importance of immunization
* Supporting work to ensure that strong health systems are in place to deliver vaccines
* Working with existing and potential manufacturers to assure an adequate, sustainable, affordable supply of quality vaccine
About the position:
The technical communications specialist will work within the Alliances and Information (A&I) team of IVAC. The A&I team conducts a variety of strategic communications and advocacy activities and works closely across IVAC’s program areas – including Epidemiology, Economics & Finance and Monitoring & Evaluation – to develop evidence-based materials and strategies aimed at increasing vaccine access throughout the developing world.
Reporting to the Communications Manager, this specialist will be responsible for assisting with the translation and interpretation of new scientific data into messages and materials tailored for a variety of audiences including pediatricians, policy-makers, health decision-makers, global health donors and the general public. In addition, the ideal candidate will be an outgoing, team-oriented person willing to pitch in on a variety of other projects as the need arises within this small, high-functioning team. The ability to interact and communicate clearly and professionally with a variety of stakeholders is key.
Primary Responsibilities:
* Assist in the translation of epidemiologic and other scientific data into materials and messages for a variety of audiences
* Serve as the focal point and A&I team liaison to IVAC’s Epidemiology team
* Coordinate the development of briefs on key technical issues for lay audiences on short timelines
* Coordinate responses to technical assistance inquiries from IVAC partners
* Track IVAC scientific and policy publications – publication timelines, placement, key findings and related outreach
* Assist with the writing and editing of monthly scientific newsletter
* Project management oversight of portfolio of communication and advocacy projects and contractors
* Assist in development of messages derived from scientific publications and research reports.
* Work with Directors to develop individual A&I project plans specifying goals and timelines
* Develop and maintain systems for monitoring progress on ongoing communication activities and assist with communications research as necessary
* Identify and monitor scheduled project deliverables, milestones, and required tasks
* Assist in providing reviews and information/reports to the Executive Director for presentation to project sponsors and external audiences
* Travel domestically and internationally by air, as required, up to 20%
Qualifications:
* Masters degree in Public Health, Epidemiology or other relevant field
* Knowledge of vaccines, pneumonia, diarrhea and other major global infectious diseases as well as understanding of epidemiologic and statistical concepts
* Communications, advocacy or journalism experience preferred
* Highly organized and able to work independently
* Minimum 3 years experience, preferably with experience in international health
* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills are required
* Demonstrated problem solving and analytic skills
* Ability to work successfully in a small team
* Enthusiasm, team spirit, dedication to the job and willingness to help out are all essential qualities
* Experience with graphic design, website content management or social media a plus
* Available for overseas travel up to 25%.
