Background:
Internews® Network is an international non-profit organization working to improve access to information for people around the world by fostering independent media and promoting open communications policies. Internews’ programs are built on the conviction that providing people with access to vibrant, diverse news and information empowers them to make their voices heard and to participate effectively in their communities.

General Function:
The Public Policy Assistant is responsible for staying abreast of political/policy developments relevant to Internews, assisting with or leading congressional outreach, attending congressional and think tank public policy hearings and briefings, helping shape Internews’ outreach based on current the current political climate, meeting with affiliated groups to educate them about Internews, tracking meetings and relationships, preparing materials for dissemination, and making calls when appropriate. When needed, the PPA will provide support to the Program Development Unit (PDU), especially when facing deadlines and/or working on large RFA’s. The PPA will also serve as the liaison between the PDU and Communications team to help ensure coordinated outreach to non profits and the government sector within DC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
* Attend public policy hearings and briefings
* Attend formal and informal networking events
* Attend early morning as well as evening meetings and social events
* Meet with affiliated groups to educate them about Internews
* Track meetings and relationships
* Prepare materials for dissemination
* Answer correspondence
* Make calls when appropriate
* Backstop Program Development Unit as needed, including help with RFA’s and monitoring and evaluation related activities.
* Stay abreast of political developments relevant to Internews’ projects, and be prepared to organize and attend politically useful meetings with foreign Internews staff when they visit DC
* Work with various Internews units including program units and the communications team as needed to organize events/briefings and deal with other DC related outreach

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Deep interest in foreign policy/international development and the political environment
* Interest and knowledge of old as well as new media and information issues
* Exceptional communication skills and ability to explain Internews and it’s unique mission
* Strong self-starter, with the ability to take direction from seasoned Internews leaders
* Previous Capitol Hill or other experience related to public policy desirable
* Political campaign experience a plus
* B.A. in political science and/or international relations
