IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, is the largest multilateral provider of financing for private enterprise in emerging markets. IFC provides loans, equity, structured finance and risk management tools, as well as advisory services to build the private sector in developing countries. The Mining Engineer will contribute to the strategic planning and execution of IFC s involvement in the mining sector, fully participating in new business development, investment appraisal and portfolio supervision activities. As an industry specialist, the Mining Engineer will play an important role in helping IFC meet client needs, promote positive and sustainable development outcomes and thereby fulfill the Corporation s broader mandate for poverty reduction. In addition to strong technical skills, the successful candidate must also have sufficient industry experience to exercise sound business and commercial judgment. The position will be based in IFC s headquarters in Washington DC.

Duties and Accountabilities:
The successful candidate will:
Evaluate a wide range of mining investment opportunities for IFC, from smaller equity investments at pre-feasibility stage (typically in TSE, AIM or ASX listed companies) to large scale mining project financings, leading due diligence work through desk review, follow-up with sponsors, technical specialists and site visits. With a focus on mining investment in emerging markets worldwide, significant travel can be expected.
Provide technical support to investment teams in supervision of existing portfolio investments.
Work with management and business development team and chief technical specialist to identify investment opportunities and to formulate and implement IFC investment strategy in the mining sector.
In coordination with the technical team lead by the Chief Mining Engineer, take a lead role in compiling and disseminating relevant sector knowledge for global and regional investment teams.
Keep abreast of current industry practice and advise IFC industry and regional staff on market outlook, general industry trends and issues.

Selection Criteria:
Undergraduate degree in geology or engineering with emphasis on exploration, mining, and mineral processing. A post-graduate degree in a relevant area of specialization would be a plus.
Broad experience (15 years+) in the mining industry combining operations, project development and consultancy to have a deep understanding of the interface between technology, operations management, technical parameters and financial viability of mineral projects.
The ideal candidate will have a mix of direct mining industry experience across a range of sectors and projects; background in consulting or as lenders advisor; experience with junior exploration companies; a wide ranging industry network including with other specialist consultants, promoters and junior equity investment community; working experience in emerging markets. Candidates with a narrower range of experience may also be considered.
Expertise in many or all of the following areas: ore resources/reserves, mining techniques, mine planning, mineral processing, metallurgy, project development, environmental and social considerations, cost estimation (capital and operating), project engineering and construction, feasibility studies, competitive positioning and benchmarking, and markets for metals and industrial minerals.
Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, in English; fluency in one or more of other major languages is a plus, computer literacy is required
