Background
The Opportunities for the Majority sector office (OMJ) promotes and finances private sector business models that develop and deliver quality products and services, create employment, and enable low-income producers and consumers to join the formal economy. This process in turn has a multiplier effect in stimulating overall economic growth and raising the incomes of a long-ignored segment of society – that 70 percent of the population with low incomes, the “base of the pyramid”.
The IDB’s involvement in the initiative ensures that each of its projects will undergo a rigorous evaluation that stresses its economic and financial viability as well as the targeting of investments to benefit low-income populations. Therefore, the Opportunities for the Majority initiative supports a variety of business models focused on low income markets that:
* Increase the Majority’s access to quality goods and services
* Foster co-creation of opportunities for businesses and local entities
* Adapt products, services and distribution channels to local needs
* Enhance product value for majority markets
* Build and strengthen local value chains and employment opportunities
* Offer strong potential to grow and repeat successful experiences
The IDB offers resources, expertise, 50 years of multilateral financing experience and a network of 26 country offices in Latin America and the Caribbean that help investors and market participants to rethink business strategies to focus on broader development opportunities, which will benefit both investors and consumers and resolve unmet demand in underserved markets.
Objectives:
The objectives of the position are: to assist OMJ management with front office operations, systems and communications, including the preparation of reports for senior management and high level communications materials and products, and the day-to-day activities of the office; and to assist senior investment officers with the analysis, development and execution of operations.
Main Activities:
Selected candidates will work with OMJ staff and will perform the following activities:a) Support investment officers, senior staff and the OMJ team as a whole with the development and timely processing of loan and guarantee operation proposals for approval by various levels of Bank management and its Board of Directors in accordance with established procedures;.
b) Prepare status reports on the OMJ operational pipeline on a daily and weekly basis, including the drafting of concise project descriptions, development objectives and pending issues;
c) Monitor the unit’s portfolio of operations for internal and external communications.
d) Maintain continually up-to-date information regarding project specifications, changes and expectations in the Bank’s systems.
e) Track OMJ disbursement projections, keeping records and relating expectations to other IDB units on regular basis;
f) Prepare reports regarding OMJ activities as requested by Senior Management, other units in the IDB Group and external parties;
g) Assist management in the preparation and monitoring of the OMJ Business Plan;
h) Support the processing, implementation and quality control of OMJ’s technical assistance program, including providing support to project teams in designing, writing and processing individual technical cooperation operations;
i) Assist project teams with the development and timely processing of of operational inputs in related OMJ loan and guarantee project documents;
j) Analyze financial models and pro-forma financial statements, perform financial and sensitivity analysis, and evaluate financial viability of projects;
k) Support OMJ’s evaluation and development effectiveness activities and systems including the preparation and monitoring of Development Effectiveness Matrices (DEMs) in individual operations;
l) Support project teams in the preparation of presentations, reports, spreadsheets, memos, press releases, etc. and
m) Support in creating the new OMJ partnerships website writing blogs, business success stories and helping create content for it.
In general, contribute to the creation of a strong teamwork environment and provide support to all OMJ activities and operations as may be required, including the day-to-day activities of the office.
Characteristics:

* Duration of Contract: Initial contract offer from 6 months up to 1 year, with possible extension of a second year.

Responsible Officer and Organizational Unit:
The coordination and supervision of the Research Fellows will be under the Senior Advisor of the Opportunities for the Majority Sector Office (OMJ/OMJ)
Requirements:
* Education MBA or Masters in finance preferred, with a background in finance, economics and/or business administration. Will consider a degree candidate with substantial coursework completed.
Must be a recent graduate (not more than three years) from an accredited academic university.
* Experience: Two years of relevant experience preferred.
* Languages: Excellent command of English and working knowledge of one other of the Bank’s official languages (Spanish, Portuguese and French).
* Skills: Initiative in research, ability to work independently and to participate in research teams. Strong analytical abilities as demonstrated by academic achievement and other personal achievements. Solid financial analysis skills. Good knowledge of MS Office.
Payment and Conditions of Employment:
The work will be carried out at Bank headquarters in Washington D.C. Selected Research Fellows will be offered a contract for a period of twelve months, renewable up to a maximum of twelve additional months. Remuneration will be determined in accordance with Bank regulations and criteria. The Bank will additionally contribute toward travel and moving expenses, if applicable. If a candidate is not a citizen or resident of the United States, the Bank will apply for a G-IV visa from the consulate of the United States in the candidate’s country of origin. If a candidate cannot obtain a visa to work at the IDB the contractual offer will be rescinded.
Individuals with relatives working for the IDB within and including the fourth degree of consanguinity and the second degree of affinity are not eligible. This includes staff members and consultants.
Candidates must be citizens of a member country of the Inter-American Development Bank.
