HRF is seeking a Program Assistant for Government Advocacy to work with three programs: Crimes Against Humanity, Fighting Discrimination, and Human Rights Defenders. The Program Assistant for Government Advocacy provides support, including research, writing, and administrative activities, for the U.S. government advocacy efforts of the three HRF programs engaged in primarily international work. This position reports to the Director of the Crimes Against Humanity Program.

HRF is seeking a Program Assistant for Government Advocacy to work with three programs: Crimes Against Humanity, Fighting Discrimination, and Human Rights Defenders. The Program Assistant for Government Advocacy provides support, including research, writing, and administrative activities, for the U.S. government advocacy efforts of the three HRF programs engaged in primarily international work. This position reports to the Director of the Crimes Against Humanity Program.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
* Provide research and writing support to each of the three programs, including researching and drafting memos as well as advocacy and media materials.
* Support advocacy activities of the three programs by monitoring hearings and other events, attending them as needed; tracking progress of legislation; coordinating with NGO partners; and preparing for and participating in advocacy activities with supervisors, including providing logistical and other support for program events in Washington and meetings with Congress and other branches of government.
* Promote coordination among the three programs to improve their common outreach to new constituencies, in particular but not limited to the Congressional Committees dealing with foreign affairs, the State Department and other relevant federal agencies, and to ensure that any overlapping work is performed efficiently and effectively.
* Provide administrative support to each of the three programs, including monitoring and updating web pages; developing, coordinating, and maintaining distribution lists and databases; and helping recruit interns.
Candidates should demonstrate familiarity with the workings of the U.S. political system, in particular Congress, as well as interest in international human rights topics and government advocacy. Candidates must have excellent research, writing, and proofreading skills and experience as well as good judgment and attention to detail. A college degree and fluency in English are required, as are strong organizational and problem-solving skills and the capacity to work under pressure and meet multiple concurrent deadlines.
The ideal candidate will have Congressional or executive branch experience and will be proficient in a foreign language.
