Org. Setting and Reporting
This post is located in the Web Services Section, News and Content Branch in the News and Media Division of the Department of Public Information. The Website Assistant reports to the Chief of the Website Arabic Unit of the Web Services Section,
The Department of Public Information is dedicated to communicating the ideals and work of the United Nations to the world; to interacting and partnering with diverse audiences; and to building support for peace, development and human rights for all.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Chief of the Arabic Unit and the guidance of the Chief of Section, the incumbent:
- Actively participates in the development of the UN website in Arabic in collaboration with other staff of the Section in a language and deadline-oriented environment and prepares new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages;
- Drafts, edits and updates web pages as needed and provides specialized design, database and programming assistance;
- Works on maintenance of the materials posted in Arabic and/or another UN official language as required; compiles relevant information pertinent to the site, as required, researching for original and/or new UN documents or informational material that may be appropriate for the Arabic language site while cross-checking with author Offices for authoritativeness of material;
- Oversees the linking of documents, determines appropriate categorization and adds appropriate language title information;
- Edits externally translated material, as needed, to conform to format and structure consistent with the style developed for the UN website; provides informal translations as necessary; Ensures correctness of entries and makes corrections to web pages (such as official names of countries, membership of UN bodies, etc.; checks and tests web pages to ensure multiple browser support and ensure that pages are accessible to persons with disabilities;
- Develops and maintains working relationships with DPI and Secretariat staff who produce original content for the UN site and works with them as well as assists the Website Officer in providing training and support services in preparing material for posting;
- Analyses weekly statistics on web page usage to assess usefulness and relevance of material posted, prepares charts and graphs while tracking and maintaining weekly tally of page views, user tracking, feedback;
Handles urgent functions and tasks during the absence of the Website Officer and/or Chief of the Unit.
Competencies

Knowledge of the United Nations and how it functions; Ability to design and maintain a large website in Arabic; In-depth knowledge of design and encoding of web pages in Arabic, using authoring tools and design tools compatible with bi-directional text and image manipulation in the context of a web content management system; Shows willingness to learn new technology; Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; Has a good working knowledge of style sheets and Javascript and keeps abreast of available technology; Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspective s and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience; Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of relevant experience, including two years specialized experience on an Arabic website as part of a multilingual team. Skills in web authoring tools capable of handling bi-directional text and Photoshop, JavaScript, CSS, ASP and PHP are a prerequisite. Proven experience in HTML, content management system, databases and other text presentation, formatting and encoding is essential, with particular emphasis on handling Arabic content.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post fluency in Arabic and English (both written and oral) is required. Arabic is normally expected to be the candidate’s first language. Drafting and editorial skills and informal translating capability into Arabic is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include a technical assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
Special Notice
This position is for local recruitment. Passing the New York Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Headquarters at New York. To make arrangements to take this test, you may bring in person a copy of your completed Personal History Profile to the General Services and Related Categories Staffing Unit (GSRCSU), United Nations Secretariat, located at One United Nations Plaza (at corner of 1st Avenue and 44th Street), Room DC1-200. GSRCSU receives applicants every Wednesday (except public holidays) between 10.00 am and 12.00 Noon.
Persons wishing to take the ASAT are pre-screened and, if successful, scheduled to sit the ASAT at a later date.
