Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Spanish Language Unit of the Radio Section, Radio and Television Service, News and Media Division, Department of Public Information. The incumbent will directly report to the Chief of Unit.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Chief of the Spanish Language Unit, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for: Researching and writing news and features in Spanish on the global activities of the United Nations; Posting such materials on the web; Writing at short notice on breaking news event or crisis; Providing assistance in assigning and editing news stories; Producing other news-related and multimedia products of the Spanish Language Unit; Performing digital editing and management of photo files; Liaising with print, websites and non-governmental organizations regarding usage of web content; Contributing ideas to multimedia programme planning and promotional efforts; Making successful outreach to international media.

Extensive knowledge in Journalism; political awareness, judgment and solid knowledge of international current affairs. Ability to work under pressure. Good research and analytical skills. Knowledge of the UN System and its work. Knowledge of issues in Latin America. Keen awareness of trends and developments in the Latin American media market. Knowledge of digital editing technology. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area; including research and writing at the international level is required. Digital desk-top editing, with commonly-used communication software, required. Experience posting audio and print content to the web required; Experience producing and writing content/reports in Spanish required. Experience writing for the web required. Experience working in Latin America is desirable. Recent journalism experience desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this fluency in Spanish and English (both oral and written) is required.
