Organizational Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Executive Office of the Department of Political Affairs and reports to Finance and Budget Officers in charge of the extrabudgetary accounts.

Responsibilities
The Finance Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
- Provide administrative support to the Finance and Budget Officers;
- Monitor contributions received for Trust Funds.
- Monitor and review status of expenditures and allotments through the information management system and compare with approved budget; prepare adjustments as necessary.
- Prepare statements on status of accounts, when required.
- Investigate erroneous charges, takes appropriate corrective accounting actions.
- Initiate liquidations.
- Prepare obligating documents, required for disbursement against trust funds.
- Prepare payment to vendors and individual contractors.
- Prepare or customize financial reports.
- Prepare statistical tables.
- Process travel authorizations, review travel claims for settlement, follow up on outstanding claims.
- Assist the Finance and Budget Officers in the departmental consolidation of financial data/reports for Department of Political Affairs’ management.
- Maintain post and staffing tables for general temporary posts funded by all sources;
- Keep up-to-date on documents/reports/guidelines that have a bearing on matters related to programme, ensuring compliance with United Nations policies and procedures;
- Draft or prepare correspondence to respond to enquiries in respect to relevant financial matters;
- Maintain and keep up-to-date files;
- Maybe responsible for providing guidance, training and daily supervision to other general service staff in the area of responsibility;
- Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience
Five years of experience in administration/budget, finance, accounting or related fields.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.

Assessment Method
Technical test and competency-based interview. Passing the New York Administrative Support Assessment Test is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Headquarters at New York. To make arrangements to take this test, you may bring in person a copy of your completed Personal History Profile to the General Services and Related Categories Staffing Unit (GSRCSU), United Nations Secretariat, located at One United Nations Plaza (at corner of 1st Avenue and 44th Street), Room DC1-200. GSRCSU receives applicants every Wednesday (except public holidays) between 10.00 am and Noon. Persons wishing to take the ASAT are pre-screened and, if successful, scheduled to sit the ASAT at a later date.
