Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Subsidiary Organs Branch of the Security Council Affairs Division of the Department of Political Affairs. The incumbent will report to the Senior Political Affairs Officer in his capacity as Secretary of the Security Council Sanctions Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004).

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Secretary of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004) concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Political Affairs Officer:
Researches, gathers and analyzes information relevant to the work of the Group of Experts on the DRC re-established pursuant to resolution 1952 (2010);
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues in the DRC and the Great Lakes Region, and in particular relevant to security issues and the arms embargo as well as events regarding the illegal exploitation of natural resources and the illegal financing of armed groups in the DRC.
Serves as focal point for the organization of field missions of members of the Group of Experts and participates in them, as appropriate;
Serves as follow-up contact and focal point between the Group of Experts and the Security Council Committee concerning the DRC, MONUSCO, other United Nations agencies, NGOs, as well as Member States and regional organizations.
Participates in, and reports on, meetings including internal staff meetings and brainstorming sessions;
Maintains effective liaison with relevant offices in the Secretariat and peacekeeping missions, in particular: the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflicts and DPKO; as well as with MONUSCO offices in the DRC and MONUSCO and BINUB offices in neighbouring countries. Liaises with Member States and other international governmental and non-governmental organizations in connection with the mandate of the Group of Experts.
Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to the mandate of the Group of Experts.;
Undertakes other assignments, as appropriate.

Competencies
Professionalism: Ability to exercise sound political judgement, excellent research, drafting and analytical skills, ability to develop effective contacts with sanctions implementation participants. Knowledge of sanctions issues, the work of the expert groups and of the Sanctions Committees, as well as familiarity with relevant decisions of the Security Council. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law or other related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, research, political analysis or related area.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English and French (both oral and written) is required.

Competency-based interview and/or other assessment method will be used.

Extension of the appointment is subject to Extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.
