Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Team Leader, the officer will participate in the work of the relevant Integrated Operational Team. He/she will inter alia: monitor closely the development and progress of operations, including relations between the parties, troop/police contributors, governments, regional organizations; identify and respond to changes, problems, incidents; assist in the daily management of one or more peacekeeping operations in the Great Lakes region, in particular the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC); interact with and prepare responses to comments, statements, and queries of parties, troop/police contributors, members of Security Council, the Peacebuilding Commission, Government officials, regional actors, including the African Union, the Office of the Special Envoy for the Great Lakes, as well as International NGOs; ensuring input of and consultations with a wide range of DPKO, DFS and United Nations system interlocutors; monitor discussions and developments in various forums with implications for peacekeeping operations; draft a high volume of a wide range of documents expeditiously and effectively, including reports of the Secretary-General to the Security Council, and draft talking points and briefing notes for meetings of senior officials; participate in the activities for implementing operations, helping to devise guidelines and terms of reference, ensure input from participants and integrate different aspects (e.g. security, administrative, legal) of current operations and pre-mission planning; advise on operational mechanisms and models to achieve departmental goals; participate in crisis management; backstop other operations in the team and perform other assignments of the Directors/Team Leaders as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent), in international relations, international economics, international law, political science or related fields. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, development or conflict resolution work at national and international levels, preferably related to Africa. At least one year of experience in a UN peacekeeping Mission is required. Experience with peacekeeping operations in Africa is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and French (both oral and written) is required.
Other Skills
Familiarity with the work of the United Nations and the functions, priorities and policies of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations is desirable.
