Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Public Affairs Section, Office of the Chief of Staff, Department of Peacekeeping Operations and Department of Field Support. The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Public Affairs Section.
Within delegated authority, the Associate Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns. Undertakes media monitoring including monitoring of the digital environment (e.g. blogs)
Drafts/compiles a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.), of information communications products for target audiences, to include press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, websites, social media channels, etc
. Organizes the clearance, production and distribution of information material including online content; conducts photo and graphic research.
Creates and implements peacekeeping digital communications and social media strategies, working in collaboration with the wider UN community including UN peacekeeping operations to promote UN goals and ideals
Develops training materials and leads training sessions on digital communications specifically tailored to the needs of Public Information teams within UN Peacekeeping Operations.
Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initials drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books, as well as digital content such as web pages and social media content.
In consultation with others, identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.
Organizes or participates in the organization of conferences, seminar, press briefings, interviews, etc.; prepares briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events including talking points for media interviews, etc.
Responds to a variety of inquiries and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence
Performs other duties as assigned
Ability to plan, execute and monitor public communication campaigns, e.g. campaign management, market research, message targeting, impact evaluation. Ability to research and analyze issues and topics related to current events. Ability to draft and compile a variety of written communication products in a clear, concise style. Ability to interact with the public to build and maintain effective business connections. An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or related area, is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area. Experience working with digital platforms and social media is required. Peacekeeping experience, either in the field or headquarters is highly desirable. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognized by the United Nations.
English and French are the working languages of the United nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another United Nations language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
The post is financed by the voluntary contributions from donor funds. Extension of appointment is subject to funding.
